Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Wac is the leader of the Quality of Life (QoL) technologies research area affiliated with Center for Informatics at University of Geneva (CUI, Switzerland) and, since 2015 – also with the Department of Computer Science (DIKU) of University of Copenhagen (Denmark).  Since 2013 she is also affiliated with Stanford University School of Medicine (MED). She holds a BSc and MSc degree in Computer Science (2003) from Wroclaw University of Technology (WUT, Poland), an MSc in Telematics (2004) from University of Twente (UT, the Netherlands), as well as a PhD in Information Systems (2009) from University of Geneva (Switzerland). In 2003-2004, Prof. Wac was a research staff member at University of Twente. In 2004 she joined University of Geneva as a research and teaching assistant, while keeping her affiliation with the University of Twente. In 2007-2010, and now since 2016 Prof. Wac is also affiliated with the MobiHealth BV start-up company. In 2009-2010, Prof. Wac was on leave for a one-year Swiss NSF post-doctoral Fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU, USA), Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII). In 2010-2012 she has been a senior scientist (French: Maître-Assistant, “MA”) and in 2012-2014 Maître d’Enseignement et de Recherche (“MER”) at the Center for Informatics (CUI) of University of Geneva (UniGE). Since 2015 Prof. Wac is an Advisor of MobileThinking SARL start-up company.

Prof. Wac researchers how mobile technologies can be leveraged for an accurate, longitudinal, real-life, context-rich, minimally obtrusive, privacy-preserving, personalized assessment of the individual’s behavior and QoL and improvement of the latter. As part of this work, the QoL research group has worked so far on creation of new models and algorithms that can be used, for example, to assess individual’s physical safety and security (via an intimacy perception), as well as physical activity, sleep, stress and public transportation usage patterns, while taking advantage of emerging sensor-based technologies. From the computer science point of view, Prof. Wac’s research interests include Quality of Experience-aware mobile systems and services with special emphasis on support of adaptive multimedia protocols and Quality of Service mechanisms, especially in the mobile healthcare (i.e., mHealth) domain. Prof. Wac strives towards effective and efficient pervasive mobile computing and communication – meeting the end-user Quality of Service requirements, Quality of Experience expectations and ultimately improving his/her Quality of Life.

Prof. Wac is since 2012 an Associate Expert of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) European Regional Initiative for mHealth. In 2014-2016 Prof. Wac serves as a Co-Chair of Interest Group on Multimedia Communication Systems (MCSIG) in the IEEE Multimedia Communication Technical Committee. In 2015 Prof. Wac has been nominated as a TEDMED Research Scholar. Since 2016 Prof. Wac is a member of the Digital Health Council of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and Member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies (ISQOLS). Prof. Wac is also a Senior Member of ACM and a Senior IEEE Member – along 2018-2020 contributing to the IEEE Distinguished Visitors program (DVP).
